Advanced Course in Dental Ceramics
Hur beter sig keramiska material som används inom tandvården egentligen – och varför?
These questions will be answered when NIOM once again launches the sought-after and unique advanced course in dental ceramics. We invite Ph.D. students, researchers, specialists, and specialist students in prosthetic dentistry, among others, to take part in this course which combines fundamental theory with clinical perspectives.
Course dates
The course consists of 9 days total, divided into three gatherings, all at NIOM in Oslo:
- October 21–23, 2026
- December 2–4, 2026
- February 3–5, 2027
Please note: The course includes a final exam and is accepted as part of post-graduate education.
By completing the full course you will be awarded 7,5 ECTS credit points.
What will you learn?
- How crystal structure and chemical bonding give ceramics their properties
- Behaviors of fine (micro- or nano-sized) powders, granulates and powder dispersion
- Driving forces for sintering and commonly used sintering methods in dentistry
- Forming methods for different geometric designs of ceramic components
- How to analyze the fracture surface of a ceramic material
- Optical properties of ceramics
- Mechanical properties of ceramics, including knowledge about ISO-standards for mechanical testing
- Fracture toughening mechanisms, such as transformation toughening and crack deflection
- Hands-on lab sessions

Accomodation
Participants provide their own accommodation and transportation to NIOM.
Thon Hotel Ullevaal Stadion is located just a 5 minute walk from NIOM. Besides this there are many hotels in Oslo city centre and from here it only takes app. 10 to reach NIOM via the subway.
